It's called PARK(ing) Day! Citizen Activists around the globe turn parking spaces into mini-parks for a day to demonstrate the need for more urban green space. The annual event is organized online, but staged offline in dozens of cities on every continent around the world. It's a demonstration of the power of social media and international collaborative activism... and a great way to have fun and relax.
If a building as old and tall as the Empire State Building can save 40% of its energy with a few simple upgrades then so can the rest of us. For this video, I traveled to Manhattan for a behind-the-scenes tour of our nation's most symbolic effort to answer the challenges of climate change.
This latest project takes us on stage at Busboys & Poets, where owner Andy Shallal provides a space for free speech and open mic poetry. Andy was born in Iraq and immigrated to the U.S. to start a new life, open awesome restaurants, and remind us what our founding principles are all about.
When I was in high school, I co-founded the Industrial Design Club. We worked on a lot of projects, including Chrysler's "Design Your Dream Car" competition. But all that pales in comparison to what these kids from West Philly are doing!
Check out the video I produced for America.gov, and you'll quickly realize that these kids are tapping their creativity and passion to run energy-efficient circles around the competition... and, by competition, I mean GM, Ford, Chrysler... and pretty much everyone else.
Done with AU classes! This was my final project for Motion Graphics II. It was a pretty involved process - from storyboard, to shooting, editing, graphic design, animation... a hard drive crash... taking a few steps back... finishing! whew! But it was worth it.
Got lots of help from lululemon employees - especially the very strong and very patient Kristen Neishi - and shot the video at the lululemon studio in Georgetown.
Collaborated on graphics with Kiril Tchangov - kirilot.com
And used a great track from the always-solid Aligning Minds - aligningminds.com
It feels like the year just started! But since we're already halfway through, I thought I'd present a reel of my work from the past few months... Also, it was an assignment for my motion graphics class (aka my last class EVER), so that also helped me get motivated.
Anna U. Davis is a super-talented and laid back DC artist. It's incredible how much effort and detail goes into each of her paintings (thousands of little magazine squares for each piece... and that's just the background!). Plus she's saying something with her work. This short profile I put together just barely scratches the surface... So try to stop by her show at Longview this month to see for yourself.
Scion celebrates its fifth year on the east coast with a live multimedia art event in Baltimore.
Another great event organized by the guys at X Culture and 88 DC. Also cool because it was my first production in my new favorite city, Baltimore (South Brooklyn)... and I just happen to drive a Scion tC myself. Sometimes worlds collide with pleasant results.
Oh! This was also the maiden voyage for my new toy: the pocket-sized Kodak Zi6. You can witness its power as the "DJ Booth Cam" and in the final shot from the hip: the BMore smokestack from the passenger seat of my car. That was all Kiril.
Music: YACHT "I Love a Computer" Camera: Sony EX-1 Shot entirely on location in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York
As seen on Juxtapoz "Check out this video made by Brandon Bloch because it’s a fun, silent narrative and we dig the editing job." -- Juxtapoz, Dec. 2008 You know it! Thanks, Juxtapoz.
What a difference 40 years makes! In 1968, the intersection of 14th and U in DC was the epicenter of race riots following MLK's assassination. 40 years later, 14th and U was ground zero for celebration as people of every race came together to mark a historic event: The U.S. electing our first black president!
I was fortunate enough to be working that night... helping shoot this video for the U.S. Dept. of State/ America.gov. We hopped from bar to bar on U Street, interviewing a bunch of enthusiastic young people. And found ourselves in historic Ben's Chili Bowl when the results actually came in! Then it was out onto the streets for a night of partying. The common theme of the night was optimism as we all look toward reclaiming America's promise.
I was commissioned by Current TV to curate and shoot a series on the DC area's emerging art scene. So far, 17 interviews have been shot on a great range of artists. They'll be shown on Current.com and on cable TV. Here are some highlights from the series:
June's edition of X in DC - A monthly live art happening put on by David Fogel and the crew at 88 Degrees. It's always a fun time, and doing the video this month was "a blast".
X = LIVE (PERFORMANCE + ART + PROJECTIONS + ELECTRONICA + FASHION) + YOU!
"Scott G Brooks is an artist currently residing in Washington DC who’s shown all over the country. Brooks currently has a solo show, Under the Skin (on view thru June 7th) at Long View Gallery in DC, exhibiting his detailed paintings with complex narratives, seeped in eerie moods. Of course, we can’t get enough! Filmmaker Brandon Bloch recently completed this film on Brooks discussing his work, process, and inspiration. Make sure to check out more of Brooks’ work at www.scottgbrooks.com." -- Juxtapoz, May 2008.
These two shorts profile DC-based artist, Billy Colbert, as he works on two series of work from an abandoned warehouse studio at 14th and T streets, NW in Washington, DC. He has since had to vacate the space so the building can be developed into luxury condos. But these two pieces help preserve the history of this unique building, while also examining the process behind the artwork of Billy Colbert.
What did I do this summer? Among other things, I took a class on Music Video Production at AU. We worked with the amazing DC band The Sketches who commissioned us to make a video for their song "Sleeper".
My main contribution can be seen in the sunflower shots at the beginning and end (yup, those are my feet... and Kelly's lovely stems). I also animated of the growing flower. And I also shot the dolly shots of the band shedding their work clothes.
The video premiered at Jammin' Java on September 9. The band is touring up and down the east coast... and premiering three new videos along the way. Check out their myspace page for a schedule. I highly recommend checking them out!
In my Production II class (Spring 2007), we were awarded the opportunity to produce a PSA on Teen Asthma for the Will Rogers Institute. I Wrote and Co-Directed the PSA. As Writer, I worked on the script and created the storyboards - as well as concept sketches. In Post-Production, I edited the piece, sound mixed, designed and animated the motion graphics.
Here is the animated version of the original storyboard.
This is the concept sketch of the Super-Villain, "Asthma Man"... and how he looked in real life.
Here are some stills from the final version of the PSA.
The PSA has been televised throughout the country.
A 3-minute short documentary on the truck underride hazard - (2006)
Probably the most exciting part of this project is the fact that it's been downloaded over 200,000 times on YouTube and is consistently watched by people throughout the country and the world. It's touched off a pretty strong debate as viewers leave their comments about the issue of truck underride.
